World’s fastest coating plant comes on stream

BASF has launched its newly modernized center for pressure sensitive adhesives at its Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany. The center houses two ultra-modern pilot plants: a new - and the world's fastest with a maximum speed of 1,500 meters per minute - coating plant for aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives, and a UV hot melt adhesive plant operating at a speed of up to 700 meters per minute. The devel-opment and modernization costs of the coating center, which was designed and built in cooperation with Pagendarm BTT GmbH, totaled €5 million.

"The ultra-modern coating center guarantees our skills advantage in coating technology and at the same time strengthens our position as an innovative producer of pressure sensitive adhesives", stated Dr. Martin Brudermüller, head of BASF's functional polymers division. "From today, we can design the joint trials we carry out with our customers even more flexibly and efficiently. We can vary the interaction between coating technology, machine speeds, carriers and pressure sensitive adhesives to an extent never previously achieved. This makes us the ideal partner for customers wishing to optimize their production processes for the manufacture of self-adhesive products such as adhesive tapes or labels. We can create even more value for our customers and for ourselves!"

Ralph Schweens, head of the Regional Business Unit Adhesives and Construction Industry Europe, spoke to journalists about BASF's global adhesive raw materials business on the occasion of the coating center's opening. With sales of around €280 million, it is one of the main pillars of the functional polymers division and comprises aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives, industrial and construction adhesive raw ma-terials.

"BASF is the world leader in pressure sensitive adhesives. We are continuing to invest in this dynamic market and have consolidated our position as an innovative trendsetter, as our new coating center shows. And above all: with our Acronal® range, we already have the products that make it even possible to achieve top production speeds of 1,500 meters a minute for aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives", emphasized Mr. Schweens.

The crucial factor behind the dynamic growth in the market for self-adhesive products was the availability of aqueous pressure sensitive adhesives - first developed by BASF more than 50 years ago. Their application is intricately linked to coating technology. In this technologically sophisticated field, BASF has time and again played a pioneering role in further refining existing coating systems and developing proprietary systems such as the vario gravure coating process and the new AGS 2500 S System BASF. BASF's new coating center for pressure sensitive adhesives at its Ludwigshafen site sets a benchmark and enhances the strength of its competence center for adhesive raw materials.

Water-based pressure sensitive adhesives are marketed by BASF under the brand name Acronal® and UV hot melt adhesives under the brand name acResin®.

BASF is the world's leading chemical company, offering its customers a range of high-performance products, including chemicals, plastics, performance products, agricultural products, fine chemicals as well as crude oil and natural gas. Its distinctive approach to integration, known in German as "Verbund," is its strength. It enables BASF to achieve cost leadership and gives the company a competitive advantage. BASF conducts its business in accordance with the principles of sustainable devel-opment. In 2002, BASF had sales of about €32 billion (circa $34 billion) and over 89,000 employees worldwide.
