Dow Corning Unveils Silicone-based Sealants for Appliance Bonding

Published on 2016-09-14. Author : SpecialChem

Dow Corning has introduced two new adhesive and sealant products increase the performance and efficiency of home appliances. These new silicone-based products also help meet other challenges related to assembly and sealing.

"These materials are engineered to provide appliance manufacturers higher productivity, enhanced design options and cost-in-use savings," says Gifford Shearer, Industrial Assembly & Maintenance Market Leader at Dow Corning.

The Two Launched Products are

  • Dow Corning® 750 Plastic Surface Adhesive Sealant offers adhesion to low-surface-energy plastic substrates that are typically difficult to bond to.
  • Dow Corning® HM-2600 Silicone Assembly Sealant is an RTV silicone hot-melt adhesive that offers instant green strength for high-speed assembly

Dow Corning® 750 Plastic Surface Adhesive Sealant - Adhesive for Difficult Substrates

"Low-surface-energy polymers such as polypropylene, polyethylene and fluoropolymers have traditionally been difficult substrates for adhesion," says Tom Galbraith, Senior RTV Specialist at Dow Corning. "Dow Corning 750 Plastic Surface Adhesive Sealant is designed specifically to adhere to these hard-to-bond surfaces. This makes it an excellent choice for bonding mechanical enclosures, sealing penetrations for plumbing, electrical lines or ducts, or adhering functional or decorative components to surfaces."

In testing, Dow Corning 750 Plastic Surface Adhesive Sealant shows superior adhesion on a variety of substrates. It can be used in a wide range of temperatures, offers excellent UV resistance and durability and does not become brittle or crack.

Dow Corning HM-2600 Silicone Assembly Sealant - Instant Green Strength Adhesive

"Silicone-based sealants offer excellent performance properties for many appliance applications," says Shearer. "With the introduction of new silicone hot melt sealants, Dow Corning is helping to satisfy appliance manufacturers’ needs for high-speed, high-volume production with an alternative to mechanical fasteners or pressure-sensitive tapes."

Dow Corning HM-2600 Silicone Assembly Sealant offers excellent clarity, tenacious adhesion to many substrates (metals and various plastics including low surface energy types) as well as instant green strength to enable high assembly throughput. The new adhesive is suitable for use with XY tables, robots and other automatic dispensing and assembly methods, Galbraith says. “Compared to organic hot melt adhesives, it offers long open/working time before curing to a flexible yet tough adhesive.”

Dow Corning HM-2600 Silicone Assembly Sealant is certified to UL94 HB and currently is being tested for food contact and drinking water contact.

The products offer:
  • Stability over a wide temperature range
  • Resistance to UV, weather and radiation
  • Chemical stability
  • Excellent electrical properties
  • Low flammability
