BYK to Unveil BYK-1640, a New No-VOC Polymer-based Defoamer for Adhesives and more

Published on 2015-04-10. Author : SpecialChem

BYK Additives & Instruments is launching a new additive on the market: BYK-1640 is a polymer-based, VOC- and silicone-free defoamer for aqueous systems which is also suitable for some applications that come into direct contact with food.

Mineral-oil-based defoamers are widely used - mainly in applications in which price is a key criterion. Negative side effects such as separation tendency, odor, environmental aspects and the often lacking approvals for direct food contact mean that the market is looking for affordable alternatives.

BYK-1640 is exactly such an alternative. The additive is mineral-oil- and hence emission-free, neutral in odor, silicone-free, and easy to incorporate. It provides high versatility that makes it widely applicable: in architectural, protective, can and paper coatings as well as in adhesives, construction chemicals and printing inks.
BYK-1640 is not only effective at low dosage but an overall very economic defoamer with excellent performance that BYK will be presenting at this year's ECS alongside other, additives for optimized processes.

About BYK Additives & Instruments

BYK Additives & Instruments is one of the leading suppliers in the field of additives and measuring instruments. Additives are chemical substances which, when used in small quantities, improve product properties such as scratch resistance or surface gloss. Manufacturing processes are also optimized by the addition of additives.

The coatings, inks and plastics industries are among the main consumers of BYK additives. Yet with oil production, the manufacture of care products, paper surface finishing, the manufacture of adhesives and sealants, or construction chemistry, too, BYK additives improve the product characteristics and production processes.
Testing and measuring instruments from BYK can effectively evaluate the quality of color, gloss and appearance as well as the physical properties of paint, plastic and paper products and are an important part of quality control.

As a globally operating specialty chemicals company, BYK has production sites in Wesel, Kempen, Moosburg and Schkopau (Germany), Deventer and Denekamp (Netherlands), Widnes (UK), Wallingford, Chester, Gonzales, Louisville (USA) and Tongling (China). BYK's instrument section (BYK-Gardner) is based in the Upper Bavarian town of Geretsried. Today the company employs around 1,900 people worldwide and forms part of the ALTANA Group.
