CVC Thermoset Expands its Hypro RLP Product Range by Adding Hypro™ 1200X90 HTB

CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH -- CVC Thermoset Specialties, an Emerald Performance Materials company, introduces Hypro™ 1200X90 HTB, the newest addition to its Hypro Reactive Liquid Polymer product line based on hydroxy-functional polybutadiene (HTPB) technology. Launched in 2011, the HTPB technology platform not only expands the range of materials offered by the company, but the diol reactive end groups also enable the reactive liquid polymers (RLPs) to be used in polyurethane systems, a growing market for RLPs.

Hypro 1200X90, when used in elastomeric polyurethanes, offers final products that exhibit high hydrophobicity due to the polybutadiene backbone. This is an especially important feature for water-resistant applications. In comparison to Hypro 2800X95 HTB, the first product in the series introduced last year, Hypro 1200X90 HTB is lower in molecular weight and, consequently, lower in viscosity and higher in hydroxyl value. Hypro 1200X90 is well suited for the production of elastomeric polyurethanes that exhibit excellent hydrolytic stability and outstanding low temperature flexibility due to its low Tg. These properties, along with excellent electrical insulation, are desirable features in applications such as potting and encapsulation, adhesives and sealants, waterproof coatings and membranes.

"This is the second product in the series of HTBs to be introduced in less than a year. CVC continues to develop new derivatives that will be included in this series of products. Stay tuned as new product introductions will be announced later this year."

Bustynowicz credits the company's ability to expand its series of HTBs to the successful capacity expansion at its Akron plant. "The first phase of the capacity expansion was completed late in 2010 when we commissioned a new reactor system," said Bustynowicz. "Completed last fall, the second phase included the addition of new bulk storage and handling equipment. The third phase is expected to be completed later this year and will result in an additional 25 percent capacity expansion."

In addition to the HTPBs, CVC manufactures a broad base of specialty RLPs. Other Hypro RLP products include butadiene/acrylonitrile elastomers with carboxyl, methacrylate vinyl, amine or epoxy functional end groups These functional end groups enable the RLPs to react into a variety of polymer systems, such as epoxy, UPE, acrylic, polyamide, plastisol and vinyl esters. HyPox™ R series products are specialty epoxy materials modified using CTBN RLPs.
