A 53-year-old tradition, the R&D 100 Awards recognize the latest and most revolutionary technologies introduced to the market each year. They recognize advances in testing equipment, chemistry, biomedical products, consumer items, high-energy physics and – in Dow Corning’s case –cutting-edge new materials.

"We are truly honored to receive this coveted nomination," said Brice Le Gouic, global marketing manager for Transportation Electronics, Dow Corning. "R&D’s annual Awards pit Dow Corning against the best of the best, and the global competition is tough. But EA-7100 Adhesive is a truly breakthrough technology that offers game-changing benefits to our customers. It is a strong contender."

Introduced in April at the SAE 2015 World Congress, Dow CorningEA-7100 Adhesive is a radical new silicone chemistry that significantly expands design options for automotive electronics by enabling strong bonds to a wide variety of substrates. Formulated with patented new silicone chemistry,Dow Corning EA-7100 Adhesive offers significantly broader latitudes when designing next-generation control units, sensors, lighting and display modules targeting today’s increasingly demanding automotive underhood applications.

Specifically, Dow Corning’s new adhesive forms strong bonds to metals, ceramics, glass and laminates, as well as plastics that have typically presented challenges for conventional silicone, such as polyethelyne, polycarbonate and acetal. Depending on the application, the material can often bond to these substrates without requiring pre-treatment or specialized cleaning. This unique property, combined with the material’s low voiding and robust adhesion, enables automotive manufacturers to design components using an expanded range of more cost-effective materials.

In addition, Dow Corning EA-7100 Adhesive’s radical new chemistry allows 50 percent or greater reduction in cure time over conventional heat-cure platinum catalyzed silicone adhesive systems. In a typical lid seal design, for example, a standard one-part addition-cure adhesive generally takes 60 minutes to cure at 125°C. By contrast Dow Corning EA-7100 Adhesive achieves full cure within 15 minutes at 100°C. In select applications, cohesive adhesion may begin within three minutes. As a result, this one-part, heat-cure adhesive may greatly accelerate processing, reduce energy use, and cut material costs.
Dow Corning EA-7100 Adhesive is available worldwide from Dow Corning and its distributors.
