Emerald Kalama Chemical Unveils K-FLEX® PG, a Propylene Glycol Dibenzoate-based Plasticizer

Published on 2013-04-08. Author : SpecialChem

CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH -- Emerald Kalama Chemical, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, announces a new plasticizer-Kalama™ K-FLEX® PG. A new composition based on propylene glycol dibenzoate, K-FLEX PG has been specifically formulated to optimize the performance of today's PVC compounds and also may be used in adhesives, coatings and sealants. Kalama K-FLEX plasticizers are highly effective, low-VOC, non-phthalate, non-alkyl phenol ethoxylate (APE-free), non-SVHC, non-PBT plasticizers that are compatible with a wide range of polymers, including acrylic, styrene acrylic, vinyl acetate (PVA), vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) systems.

"Kalama K-FLEX PG further extends our product line of phthalate-free plasticizers and coalescents by offering new compositions to complement our traditional products based on diethylene and dipropylene glycol dibenzoate," said Shamsi Gravel, Emerald Kalama's product line manager for The Americas. "Last year we dedicated our new global R&D center, a key part of our strategy to enhance our abilities to develop new technology solutions and provide support for our customers. We also launched our new patent-pending dibenzoate triblend, the first product in our expanded platform. These new technology platforms enable the formulator greater latitude to tailor and optimize key characteristics such as polymer compatibility in water-based systems and fusion characteristics in vinyl and melt compound systems. More importantly, use of these materials in the formulation delivers performance benefits to the end products, such as improved scrub, stain and extraction resistance."

In side-by-side testing in vinyl applications , K-FLEX PG showed superior stain resistance, improved extraction resistance to solvents and oils, better fusion characteristics, lower fusion and gelation temperatures, and higher fused gel strength and wear layer toughness than other materials. When used in a plastisol system, K-FLEX PG provides a significantly improved gel strength versus plastisols with DINP and DOTP and slightly higher than plastisols with BBP. As a very high solvator, it is an ideal product to blend with other GP plasticizers to tailor and optimize the end-performance. In adhesive applications, the lower efficiency allows for higher loading of K-FLEX PG in the formulation without sacrificing performance properties.

The component of K-FLEX PG is listed under FDA 21CFR175.105, indirect food additives - adhesives and components of coatings. This product is also REACH pre-registered in the EU and listed on many global inventories. K-FLEX PG is non-regulated under domestic and international transport regulations. In addition, unlike some other plasticizers, it is specially formulated so that it does not bear a "dangerous for the environment" pictogram on the label under the newest European CLP "Regulation (EC) 1272/2008." Emerald Kalama Chemical also produces sodium and potassium benzoate, benzoic acid and intermediates, and specialty flavor and fragrance ingredients, which the company sells globally through its distribution partners. The business has manufacturing operations in Kalama, WA and in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Emerald Kalama Chemical products are used in a range of applications from beverage preservatives to personal care and household products, as well as industrial applications.
