Since growth of organisms like mold, algae and fungi can spoil the aesthetics and adhesive properties, it is recommended to add preservatives / biocides / fungicides to adhesives. They play a vital role in inhibiting the growth and spread of microorganisms. Though they are added to preserve adhesives, they can also be used as performance additives to prevent biodegradation of the dry adhesive film. Some commonly used preservatives / biocides / fungicides for adhesive systems are phenols and formaldehydes.
