Solvents are added to adhesive formulations to achieve a spreadable consistency and faster wetting of the substrate. They reduce the viscosity of the base resin, facilitating addition of other additives. In adhesive formulations, it is necessary that solvents evaporate completely before curing; therefore, the use of solvents in adhesives / sealants is limited to those applications which provide them a passage to escape. Several aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, alcohols, esters, etc. are used as solvents in adhesives.
