Tackifiers are low molecular weight materials added to adhesive formulations to generate tack and improve adhesion. They reduce the modulus and increase the glass transition temperature of the adhesive formulation to achieve the required tack and peel strength. Tackifiers significantly influence the cost and other characteristics of adhesives such as viscosity, color, thermal stability, and odor. Adhesive and sealant formulators add tackifiers to create the correct balance between adhesion and cohesion depending on the end use application. Tackifiers can be grouped as hydrocarbon resins, rosin resins and terpene resins.
