Antioxidants for Adhesives

Specialty Applications of Antioxidants

Antioxidants play a key role in adhesive formulation. They preserve adhesion performances and rheological behavior during processing and aging which are critical to guarantee the high level of quality and performances needed in industrial bonding applications. Explore the several areas of adhesives and sealants applications of antioxidants here.

Overview

Key Applications

The chemical types of primary and secondary antioxidants that are most often used in common adhesive applications are shown in the Table below.

Type of Antioxidant Antioxidant Chemistry Common Resin Applications
Primary Antioxidants
PA1 2, 6-di-t-butyl-p-cresol Arylamines tend to discolor and cause staining
PA2 Tetrakis[methylene(3, 5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxylhydorcinnamate)]methane Phenolics are generally stain resistant and include simple phenolics (BHT), various polyphenolics, and bisphenolics
PA3 2, 4-bis(n-octylthio)-6-(4'-hydroxyl-3'-5'-di-t-butylanilno)-1, 3, 5-triazine Arylamines tend to discolor and cause staining
PA4 2, 4-bis[(octylthio)methyl]-o-cresol Phenolics are generally stain resistant and include simple phenolics (BHT), various polyphenolics, and bisphenolics
PA5 Triethyleneglycol-bis-3-(3'-t-butyl-4'-hydroxy-5'-methylphenyl)propionate SBR
PA6 Butylated reaction product of p-cresol and dicyclopentadiene
PA7 Hindered phenol
Secondary Antioxidants
SA1 Tris(nonylphenyl)phosphite

Now. let's discuss key markets and types of adhesives used.

Non-Woven

Adhesives Type Used - Styrene block copolymer based hot-melts and Polyolefin based hot-melts

Within the non-woven industry, hot-melt adhesives are used extensively for the production of a variety of products such as baby diapers, feminine care products and medical goods. In general, the formulation of hot-melt adhesives for the nonwoven industry requires products with superior technical performance as well as regulatory compliance.

Antioxidants will provide the high stability in molten stage needed for these industrial processes that are highly sensitive to any rheological change, which may result in loss of production efficiency. High adhesion properties are also required to bond difficult substrates such as polypropylene or to maintain elastics elongation.

Packaging

Adhesives Type Used - Water based adhesives, Hot-melt adhesives and Solvent-based Polyurethane

Hot-melts, water-based adhesives and polyurethane adhesives are widely used. Hot-melts and water-based adhesives mainly in pulp and paper related industries, polyurethanes in "flexible packaging" for film to film lamination. The formulation of these adhesives requires products with superior technical performance as well as regulatory compliance like FDA for example.

Bookbinding

Adhesives Type Used - Water based adhesives, Hot-melt adhesives and Hot-melt polyurethanes

Hot-melts, water-based adhesives and polyurethane adhesives are widely used. Hot-melts and water-based adhesives for most classical applications, polyurethanes for specific heat resistance requirements (travel guides for example) or for high quality collection books.

The formulation of these adhesives requires products with superior ageing properties and high color stability (as most formulations are white) provided by the use of antioxidants.

Tapes & Labels

Adhesives Type Used - Styrene block copolymer based hot-melts, Water based adhesives and Solvent based adhesives

Hot-melts, water and solvent-based adhesives are widely used. The formulation of these adhesives requires products matching highly specific technical requirements with superior ageing performance which can include UV resistance, cold or heat resistance or moisture resistance for example.

Wood & Furniture

Adhesives Type Used - Water based adhesives, Hot-melt adhesives and Hot-melt polyurethanes

In the wood and furniture industry, EVA, polyamide or polyurethane based hot-melts and water-based adhesives are widely used. EVA based hot-melts for general purpose profile wrapping or edge bonding, water-based adhesives assembly and polyamide or polyurethane based hot-melt for most critical applications in kitchen or bathroom furniture.

Furniture's long-life cycle needs very high-quality bonds. Antioxidants will guarantee stability in application properties and long-term performances.

Industrial & Transportation

Adhesives Type Used - Water based adhesives, Hot-melt adhesives, Reactive adhesives and Solvent based adhesives

In industrial applications, tailor-made formulations are optimized to match specific and highly technical requirements. Most families of adhesives are used depending on substrates, targeted final performances or application process.

In the transportation industry, high performances are needed to match highly demanding bonding and ageing performances. Antioxidant will preserve application properties, adhesion performance and long-term stability of bonds.

Building & Construction

Adhesives Type Used - Water based adhesives, Hot-melt adhesives, Reactive adhesives and Solvent based adhesives

Adhesives and sealants are now key materials for the building and construction industry. Main applications involve water-based adhesives hot-melts or sealants. The adhesives must meet demanding requirements including heat, cold or moisture resistance for outdoor application or even structural performance in glazing for example.

Bonding in construction is sometime guaranteed for 10 years or more. Antioxidants will provide solutions to match most difficult requirements in adhesives for building and construction.
