When two companies start suing each other over technology, it’s a good sign that they’re competing in a valuable market – and on that basis bio-based binders show potential. In 2011 two multinational companies began battling it out in the courts over the similarities between the biobased binder technologies in their insulation. The sustainability these adhesive polymers promise stretches from insulation to also encompass applications such as bringing wood fibres together in composites. But with insulation exploiting biobased binders only hitting the market in 2009, some biobased binders are comparatively young.
