Blocked Isocyanates and Other Latent Hardeners for One Component Polyurethane Adhesives and Sealants

Two component (2K) polyurethanes have an established position as high performance adhesives, sealants, and coatings. However, 2K systems may be inappropriate for a given application because of metering and mixing equipment costs or because of impractically short pot life. One component (1K) polyurethane systems have been developed that eliminate these problems and provide high performance properties that are equivalent or better than 2K systems. These products generally rely on an ambient moisture curing mechanism. They have been the subjects of a number of previous SpecialChem articles. The main obstacle with one component (1K) polyurethane systems is to provide a fast cure mechanism while maintaining long shelf life. To overcome this problem, formulators typically have turned to chemically blocked systems that unblock to become active when exposed to an external influence such as moisture or heat. These long shelf-life 1K polyurethane systems do not have the carefully controlled mixing ratio requirements or the pot life concerns of 2K systems.
