Building & Construction - Part VI Structural and Semi-structural Applications, Durability Auperior to 20 Years

SpecialChem / Philippe Cognard – Jan 21, 2004

In the previous parts we have studied the various types of adhesives which are used in Construction and their technical characteristics. In this section we will review the structural end uses, ie the uses where the mechanical strength exceeds 5 to 10 Mpa in tensile shear strength and the durability exceeds 20 years, so that the strength and durability of the adhesive bonds are, more or less, comparable to the strength and durability of the materials to be bonded themselves. The bonding of some prefabricated parts which are used on outside parts of the building, such as doors and windows, structural sandwich panels, which all should be structural parts, will be studied in other papers on SpecialChem site (for instance wood windows and structural panels will be studied in the series "Woodworking and furniture adhesives" to be started end of 2004). The problem of durability in construction and civil engineering Structural and some outside parts must last during the whole life of the construction.
