Driving Adhesive Researchers Up the Wall

Andy Extance – Aug 12, 2009

In today's era of nanotechnology researchers across the world seem strangely drawn to mimicking the way that geckos climb up vertical surfaces, attached via tiny hairs on their feet. While these novel dry adhesives exploit the same kind of forces that pressure-sensitive adhesives do, it appears the type of material used is less important than the shape. Although the mechanism behind this kind of adhesion has only been understood since 2000, some applications are already emerging.
