Looking Toward the Future – Pressure Sensitive Tapes

SpecialChem / Edward Petrie – Sep 14, 2005

It is important to monitor the winds of change that are occurring in the pressure sensitive adhesives area. For those who pay attention, this course of action offers new business opportunities, and those who pay no attention risk business failure. In order to track trends impacting pressure sensitive adhesives, it is necessary to look at two main industries where these adhesives supply an essential component: (1) pressure sensitive tapes and (2) pressure sensitive labels. Tapes roughly account for 60% of the pressure sensitive adhesives market. Labels, including decals, account for about 30% of the market. The remainder is primarily laminating adhesives and transfer films used for direct application to products such as decorative and protective sheets, floor tiles, and numerous other specialty applications. It is important to realize that the pressure sensitive adhesive is only one of several essential material components in tape or label products. For example, the backing and release materials that are used in constructing tapes and labels can be a significant cost component.
