Styrene Butadiene Block Copolymers as Solvent Borne Sealants

SpecialChem / Edward M. Petrie & Edward M Petrie – Mar 21, 2012

This article will focus on the use of styrene block copolymers in solvent borne sealant systems. It explores the value propositions provided by solvent borne SBC based sealants to the end-user and formulator. The advantages and disadvantages of formulating and using SBC sealants will be considered, and several starting formulations will be offered. Styrene butadiene block copolymers (SBCs) are useful base polymers for the formulation of sealants. Because of their thermoplastic nature, SBC can be easily formulated into either a hot melt or a solvent borne sealant. SBCs provide a valuable combination of properties in both forms. However, this article will focus on their use in solvent borne sealant systems.
