We start now to study Furniture adhesives and bonding techniques.
The first step in Furniture manufacturing is to decorate panels by bonding a decorative veneer ( true wood veneer ) or film or other laminates to the base panels which may be: wood, particle board, plywood or MDF.
PVC is quite often used for furniture panels. It may be bonded with 4 types of adhesives:
1. acrylic emulsion adhesives,
2. VAE ( vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer ) emulsion adhesives,
3. Polyurethane adhesives, water based or solvent based.
As we have seen earlier, all 4 types have an excellent adhesion to plasticised PVC, excellent resistance to plasticizers migration, competitive prices.
Water resistance are good enough for use in semi-dry rooms such as kitchens.
Because fire hazards is a major problem in woodworking industries, solvent base adhesives have been eliminated in many countries. However, they are still commonly used in asian countries. In this case strict fire protection and safety are mandatory
