Applicable Base Polymer Properties

The Dow Chemical Company has developed a novel class of hydrophobic polyether polyols that can impart hydrophobic character to polyurethane formulations while simultaneously offering the benefits of:

  • Low viscosity
  • Tunable molecular weight
  • Fidelity of polyol functionality
Vorapel D3201 is a hydrophobic diol with a hydroxyl equivalent weight of approximately 1000. It is a clear, colorless liquid exhibiting very low viscosity (~ 300-500 cps)

Resulting Properties

This Fully formulated sealant systems can is be made using Vorapel D3201 hydrophobic prepolymers. An example of a formulated system is shown above. It has Mechanical properties comparable to a sealant formulated with a conventional polypropylene oxide polyol prepolymer are obtained. However, the VORAPEL-based system will offer improved retention of these properties under exposure to water.
