Epoxy adhesives are generally more resistant to a wide variety of liquid environments than other structural adhesives. However, they are generally considered to be very rigid systems, and as such they do not have exceptionally good impact or peel resistance unless modified with tougheners such as CTBN.

VPS 4721 is an epoxy functional silane resin from Evonik. The adhesion promoter improves the adhesion of 1K/2K epoxy. In addition, the adhesion promoter leads to improved strength, reduced VOC formation, advantages in labeling, improved hydrophobicity of the cured formulations and increased storage stability in water borne formulations.

Resulting Properties

The above formulation presents a typical one component epoxy adhesive formulation using CTBN toughening agents. Toughened epoxy adhesives are generally available as single component, elevated temperature curing systems that employ dicyandiamide as the curing agent. The durability of CTBN modified epoxies is satisfactory as measured by most long term moisture tests.

The adhesive bond with VPS 4721 adhesion promoter tolerates up to > 20% greater shear force before cohesion failure as compared to a similar adhesive formulation based on Dynasylan® GLYMO adhesion promoter
