Applicable Base Polymer Properties

The amorphous polyolefin based hot melts are widely used in such areas as packaging, non-wovens, and product assembly. They are suitable for adhering many substrates. The products are tailored copolymers of ethylene, propylene or 1-butene and exhibit a range of melt viscosities, needle penetrations and softening points, surface tackiness, and open times. Incorporation of 1-butene gives copolymer products long open times and low softening points of around 107°C. The tensile strength varies proportionally with the softness of the polymers. The compatibility of blends with tackifiers and waxes is directly related to the chemical nature of the copolymer and its molecular weight.

Resulting Properties

The formulation presented here shows properties which make them highly desirable to be used in nonwoven and general assembly applications. This APO based hot melt adhesive composition has a variety of end uses, particularly in construction and elastic attachment applications for nonwoven articles such as disposable diapers. Unlike typical hot melt adhesives, this composition can withstand high peel and shear loads at elevated temperatures for extended periods of time without experiencing catastrophic bond failure.
