Electron Beam Crosslinkable Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene HMA

Adhesives Formulation

Applicable Type
Applicable Industrial Sectors

Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Styrene block copolymers (SBCs) offer cohesion, strength, and heat resistance for both pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and non-pressure sensitive adhesives. The styrene phase forms a physically crosslinked network in the adhesive at room temperature. Of the SBCs, styrene butadiene styrene has the highest shear strength and moderately good peel strength. Crosslinking via UV or EB radiation will provide even greater heat resistance.

Typical Properties

Properties
SBC based adhesives have a good combination of low cost, adhesion, physical properties, and processing characteristics. By crosslinking with ultraviolet or electron beam radiation, a crosslinked adhesive can be achieved having improved heat resistance,

Resulting Properties

Radiation curable hot melt adhesives can be block copolymers such as styrene-butadiene-styrene polymer. The above formulation is an example of a typical EB curable hot melt adhesive. Multifunctional crosslinking agents are often incorporated at concentrations from 1-25 parts per hundred of rubber. These crosslinking agents provide high peel and shear strength. Additions of stabilizers such as butyl zimate (ZDBC) can be employed to reduce the degree of crosslinking. Tackifying resins in pressure sensitive adhesives formulations are also important in achieving the correct balance between crosslinking (cohesive strength) and adhesion.
