Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Hot melt EVAs are made from a combination of solid thermoplastic copolymers, tackifying resins, and waxes that function with the right viscosity when applied in the bookbinding operations. EVA adhesives demonstrate strong adhesive properties, but most importantly they set quickly by virtue of their hot melt character.

The source of EVA Carton Sealing Hot Melt Adhesive for Low Temperatures formulation is Adhesives Formulary Handbook, NIIR Board, Asia Pacific Business Press, Inc., 2010, p. 267.

Resulting Properties

A starting formulation for an EVA hot melt formulation commonly used for cartons and folding boxes that will experience low service temperatures is given in the table above. EVA resins are considered to be relatively safe to use in food applications. Certain adhesive manufacturers offer EVA resins that are approved for indirect food contact (FDA 21 CFR.175) applications.

This specific formulation listed above has been found to provide:
  • Excellent tack
  • Fast set-up time
  • Good adhesion to cellophane, paper, aluminum, and many other packaging films
  • Poor adhesion to polypropylene
  • Recommended for use as a pre-applied heat sealable carton adhesive or for closing packages on a carton closing machine.
