Applicable Base Polymer Properties

PIB has long been used as a basic substance in the compounding of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs). Relative to other known elastomers, synthetic polymers based on isobutylene offer a number of advantages. Owing to their synthetic production, they are free of unwanted ingredients and due to their complete saturation they are highly stable to oxidation. PIBs are not a skin irritant and adhesives used in medicine (e.g., surgical tape adhesive, transdermal systems) are usually based on PIBs.

Resulting Properties

A typical isobutene hot melt compound has the composition as shown above. Isobutene adhesives are known for excellent adhesion to most substrates and good water resistance. However, they can stain adjacent surfaces and have relatively poor recovery from extension. The polymeric compositions along with the other additives will affect both the application and the ultimate performance properties of the joint.
