Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Styrene block copolymers (SBCs) offer cohesion, strength, and heat resistance for both pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) and non-pressure sensitive adhesives. The styrene phase forms a physically crosslinked network in the adhesive at room temperature. Of the SBCs, styrene ethylene butadiene styrene (SEBS) has the high shear strength and excellent weathering resistance. SEBS hot melt sealants are achieving success in the automobile assembly and mobile home manufacturing industries. Only SBC polymers that are fully saturated can offer excellent resistance to degradation by air, ozone, or UV light. SEBS copolymers have saturated rubber midblocks and when formulated with saturated resins, plasticizers, and stabilizers can obtain a balance of adhesive properties as well as resistance to degradation by oxidation or UV light.

Resulting Properties

SEBS thermoplastic elastomers are best known for their high heat resistance, high tear strength, and good tensile strength and elongation. Sealants have good adhesion to glass and aluminum along with excellent mechanical properties. It also has a low moisture vapor transmission rate along with excellent UV and thermal stability. In some applications, however, stress is carried by the sealants, such that the material is in essence considered to be an adhesive-sealant. Styrene block copolymers can be formulated to meet the requirements of either kind of sealant. Because of their lower cost, SBS block copolymers are usually chosen for this type of application, but in roofing and paving applications, the SEBS block copolymers are also used because of better long-term aging resistance. The table above shows a starting formulation for a SEBS pressure sensitive adhesive that can be used for weatherable tapes.
