Applicable Base Polymer Properties

The main feature of the PVC resin used in formulating a plastisol is the particle size. It must be small enough to permit it to stay in suspension without settling. This usually mandates a dispersion grade of PVC powder (about 1 micron in diameter). Another key requirement is that the resin must resist solvation at room or storage temperatures so that the final product will have a practical shelf life.

Resulting Properties

Moderately high bond strength can be achieved to many common substrates. Long-term flexibility is a distinct advantage in that the plastisol can accommodate relative motion between substrates and act as a vibration damper. This feature enables PVC plastisols to compete in both the adhesive and sealant markets. The formulations show that the use of a metallic diacrylate produces significantly higher adhesion to cold rolled steel.
