Solvent Borne SEBS / Polybutene Sealant

Adhesives Formulation

Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Isobutene rubber is an elastomeric polymer that is used in a wide variety of construction sealants. Because of its unique properties, it also is used in the automotive, electrical/electronic, and food processing industries among others.

Polyisobutylene as a homopolymer is permanently tacky, and it has the characteristic of being self-healing. Polyisobutylene is a glass-clear polymer with elastomeric properties although showing much greater cold flow than most unvulcanized rubbers. In this formulation, the SEBS is added to provide better strength characteristics.

Sealants can be applied in a number of different forms. It is used widely as a hot melt, solvent solution, preformed tape or gasket, and as a gun-dispensable sealant (this formulation).

Resulting Properties

It is a typical solvent borne isobutene sealing compound which offers excellent adhesion to most of the substrates and good water resistance. However, it can stain adjacent surfaces and has relatively poor recovery from extension.

The polymeric compositions along with the other additives will affect both the application and the ultimate performance properties of the joint.

This formulation has the following characteristics:

  • Can be extruded readily from a manual applicator
  • Lower cost
  • Low-temperature flexibility
  • Excellent durability and water resistance
  • Good package stability and adhesion
  • Will withstand cyclic joint movement
