Applicable Base Polymer Properties

Acrylic emulsions offer a low-cost adhesive with moderate performance properties. They are tremendously versatile due to the large number of different monomers and resins available. Acrylic waterborne adhesives can provide bonds ranging from flexible and tough to hard and rigid depending on the formulation. Acrylic adhesives inherently have very good resistance to moisture, UV and oxidative environments and are generally preferred for outdoor applications.

Resulting Properties

The table above provides an example formulation for an acrylic latex emulsion adhesive that can be used as a mastic adhesive for resilient and wood flooring. Non-chlorinated adhesion promoters (Advabond 7418 and Advabond 7251) were added to the formulation for enhanced adhesion to low surface energy substrates such as polypropylene. The polyolefin backbone of the adhesion promoter molecules allows for better wetting and surface bonding.
