CVC Adds Reactor Train to Expand Capacity for its OMICURE™ Urea Accelerators

Published on 2013-12-16. Author : SpecialChem

CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH -- CVC Thermoset Specialties, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, announced the addition of a new reactor train and improved product separation technology to nearly double capacity for its OMICURE™ line of urea accelerators. The expansion incorporates upgrades to the production process that will allow CVC to increase availability of its OMICURE™ products that are well known for their ability to optimize curing productivity of epoxy systems. Other improvements are designed to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacturing operation.

CVC also recently made investments to expand its R&D capabilities to support its full line of thermoset resins and additives and to expand capacity of its ERISYS™ line of reactive diluents and modifiers.

"The OMICURE™ line is an important part of the wide range of formulating tools we provide for applications that benefit from increased durability and lighter-weight construction," said Charlie Zarnitz, epoxies product manager for CVC. "Specifically, the growth of OMICURE™ urea accelerators has been driven by the increased use of high-performance composites, such as those used in wind-blade, aerospace and automotive applications."

Zarnitz continued, "The OMICURE™ accelerators are unique products in the market with a superior ability to lower cure temperatures and increase reaction speed in heat-cured, one-part epoxy formulations, and they are often used in conjunction with our OMICURE™ dicyanamide curing agents. The catalysts and accelerators together deliver value to customers seeking to increase productivity, energy efficiency and performance in demanding applications. The OMICURE™ urea-based accelerators also offer a safer alternative to the use of the more environmentally hazardous, chlorinated and aromatic diuron."

The innovative chemistry of CVC's OMICURE™ line optimizes ultimate mechanical properties of latent, one-component epoxy systems, such as dispersability, reactivity, uniform cure, low settling potential and other properties critical to the success of the formulation. The line includes the OMICURE™ DDA dicyandiamide series, OMICURE™ U series of substituted urea accelerators and OMICURE™ B series of boron-based catalysts.

This expansion project aligns with Emerald's other initiatives in environmental stewardship. Emerald has set a 2020 goal of implementing productivity improvements designed to reduce the company's overall environmental footprint by 25% over its 2010 baseline. Each of Emerald's eight operations has developed meaningful goals and measurements and identified a range of projects to achieve these objectives. By boosting productivity and technology for the OMICURE™ product line, coupled with the recently announced debottlenecking plans for its ERISYS™ line, CVC will reduce VOCs, energy usage and wastewater generation at its Maple Shade, N.J. facility.

CVC's line of OMICURE™ urea accelerators and catalysts are produced at the group's ISO-9001 certified facility in Maple Shade, N.J. CVC also provides a comprehensive portfolio of other unique high-performance products for structural composites, adhesives, coatings and industrial applications, where low VOC content, light weight and high durability are significant growth drivers. Products include ERISYS™ monomers and modifiers, EPALLOY™ specialty epoxy resins, HyPox™ elastomer modified epoxies and Hypro™ reactive liquid polymers (RLP).
