Dow Ends Order Allocation for Solution Vinyl Resins

Published on 2005-07-20. Author : SpecialChem

Midland,MI -- The Epoxy Products & Intermediates (EP&I) business of The Dow Chemical Company announced that substantial capital investments have dramatically improved its supply position for UCAR™ solution vinyl resin (SVR) products. The company says that it is now able to meet 100 percent of annual contractual volumes and future forecasted demand for all UCAR SVR products.

Since the beginning of this month (July 2005), Dow has met the 100 percent order fill-rate for customers in North America and Latin America. Dow has committed to do the same for customers in Europe and Asia Pacific effective August 1, 2005.

A tight market environment, compounded by unplanned shutdowns of its plant at Texas City (Texas, U.S.) and low inventories, forced Dow to place UCAR SVR products on allocation in June 2004. Since then, Dow has made capital improvements to the plant and the infrastructure of the Texas City manufacturing site. As a result, production rates have steadily increased, reliability has improved and inventories have been replenished.

"Our investments in the plant and the manufacturing site demonstrate our unyielding commitment to ensure a continuous supply of the highest quality and broadest range of SVR products available to the industry," said Patrick Ho, business vice president, Dow EP&I. "With the dramatic improvements that we've made to our operations, we are now better positioned than ever before to deliver on our commitments and give our customers the confidence to rely on us as their long-term supplier.

"SVR is strategically important to Dow," added Ho. "The business fits well with other product lines such as epoxy and urethanes, we are fully back integrated in all of the key materials needed to produce SVR and we have the resources and partnerships in place to remain the industry leader now and well into the future. We will continue making proactive investments to ensure we meet customers' needs for the unique functionality of our UCAR SVR products."

Dow expects to achieve further production efficiencies by the end of the year through various projects using the business improvement methodology of Six Sigma.

Dow produces UCAR SVR products through a proprietary solution polymerization process. All UCAR SVR products have a unique combination of solvent, chemical, and stain resistance with hardness and flexibility. Applications include coatings, inks and adhesives for rigid and flexible packaging, heat-seal lacquers, industrial coatings, wood sealers, strippable coatings, and maintenance and marine coatings.
