Emerald Kalama Doubles its Capacity for K-FLEX® Non-phthalate Plasticizers in USA

Published on 2013-07-03. Author : SpecialChem

Emerald Kalama Chemical, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, announced it completed its latest capacity expansion for K-FLEX® non-phthalate plasticizers at its Kalama, WA (USA) facility. This is the second expansion for the K-FLEX product line at the company's Washington facility, effectively doubling its capacity since 2011. The company also commissioned a new K-FLEX manufacturing site in the Netherlands in 2012 as a part of its overall global growth strategy.

"The growing demand for our K-FLEX platform, coupled with the success of our latest product innovations, has fueled the need for our most recent expansion," said Shamsi Gravel, Emerald Kalama's product line manager for The Americas. "Over the last several years, we have been expanding our range of products into new applications to introduce more environmentally friendly products that provide performance advantages to our customers. During this time, we have launched five new products and filed four patent applications, demonstrating our value in a range of coatings, vinyl plastisol, adhesives and sealants, and graphic arts applications. This strategy is in direct response to changing needs in the marketplace as companies seek viable alternatives for phthalate plasticizers and high-VOC coalescents."

K-FLEX plasticizers and coalescents are used in adhesives, PVC compounds, coatings and other latex polymer applications. In these applications, K-FLEX products are known for enhancing film formation, adhesion, processing characteristics and improving the resistance of the end-product to oil, grease and water. Other important benefits include improved scrub resistance, gloss retention in coatings, stain resistance and toughened wear layers in plastisols when compared with other materials.

"The K-FLEX product line is one of the key growth platforms for Emerald Kalama Chemical. We have aggressive plans to further increase our global manufacturing capacity and expand our technologies in order to support customer demand for our K-FLEX products," said Edward T. Gotch, president of Emerald Kalama Chemical. "Our Kalama, WA facility is an excellent base of operations and applications support from which we can address the market's needs and integrate with other key feed stocks manufactured at the site. This latest expansion meets our current needs in the Americas and fits our long-range global strategic plan."

Emerald Kalama Chemical also produces sodium and potassium benzoate, benzoic acid and intermediates, and specialty flavor and fragrance ingredients, which the company sells globally through its distribution partners. The business has manufacturing operations in Kalama, WA and in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Emerald Kalama Chemical products are used in a range of applications from beverage preservatives to personal care and household products, as well as industrial applications.
