FEICA, the Association of the European Adhesive and Sealant Industry, and EURADH (European Adhesion Societies) announce the winner of the third 2023 Adhesion Innovation Award (AIA). The third FEICA/EURADH Adhesion Innovation Award (AIA) is won by Mr. Marvin Kaufmann for his publication ‘How adhesives flow during joining’.
Raise Awareness of Outstanding Innovations
The joint FEICA and EURADH Award for Innovative Adhesion Science aspires to stimulate the interactions between industry and science. It is also a great opportunity for both FEICA and EURADH to raise awareness of the outstanding innovations in our sector, which contribute significantly towards sustainability and the European economy.
The aim of the AIA is to attract young researchers and scientists working in adhesion science across Europe. One of the criteria is that they have already published outstanding work. The third edition of the Award focused on sustainability, durability, and industrial applications, among all other aspects of adhesive bonding and adhesion.
For AIA 2023, 7 excellent candidates submitted outstanding papers in innovative adhesion science. The EURADH jury examined each submission for practical application, sustainability and scientific impact.
Importance of Innovations in Sustainable Development
The EURADH Jury agreed that Mr. Marvin Kaufmann’s paper was the clear winner of AIA 2023 due to its combination of great experimental work and modeling which involved process development and systematic analysis to address a significant problem in adhesion. Mr. Kaufman is currently finishing his doctoral thesis at Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen, Germany.

This year’s entries again demonstrate how important innovations are to sustainable development. Mr. Kaufman’s paper is an excellent and innovative piece of work, very well explained,” said Kristel Ons, FEICA’s secretary general.

The flow of adhesives is very complex and in applications excess adhesives need to be applied using an empirically determined pattern. Mr. Kaufman developed a new method that improves sustainability not only through the reduction of experiments needed to work out the ideal application pattern, but also by complete avoidance of overfilling (thus reducing waste) and as a direct result, the requirement of only minimal cleaning. In addition, the number of defect parts produced is significantly reduced,” said Prof. Dr Andreas Hartwig, chair of EURADH & WCARP 2023.
Mr. Kaufmann started working at Fraunhofer IFAM in 2016. A first-rate researcher, he played an important part in a number of research projects and won the Peter Wefing Prize in 2017.
Mr. Kaufman will receive a €3,000 prize, funded by FEICA. The Award presentation will take place at the EURADH/WCARP conference in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in September 2023 and at the FEICA Conference and EXPO next year, in September 2024.
The EURADH adhesion societies consist of DECHEMA (Germany), Société Française du Vide (France), De bond voor materialenkennis (The Netherlands), Associação Portuguesa de Adesão e Adesivos (Portugal), Grupo Español de Adhesion y Adhesivos (Spain) and the Society for Adhesion and Adhesives (UK).
