ICI invests in new Brazil adhesives manufacturing facility

Published on 2005-12-15. Author : SpecialChem

A new manufacturing facility in Brazil has been opened by ICI to meet growing demand for industrial adhesives in the country.
The investment introduces local provision of adhesives, some previously imported by the company for the woodworking, packaging and paper converting sectors, some for export, and some to support growth from marketing programmes to local accounts.

The factory is operated by ICI-subsidiary National Starch and Chemical Company and makes hot-melt, water-based adhesives and emulsion polymers.

The largest of its type in the region, the factory is located at Jundiai, 34 miles north-west of Sao Paulo on a greenfield site owned by ICI that is already scheduled for expansion in output in 2006. National Starch also has plans to build a technical centre and pilot plant on the site for its growing food starch business.

Tom Agin, Senior Divisional Vice President of National Starch's Latin America and South Africa Adhesives business, said: "This investment and plans for expansion, together with our plans for the food starch business at the Jundiai site, reflect our confidence in the future of the markets in Brazil and the region, and are in line with ICI's announced strategy for 2003-2007."

ICI is one of the world's major specialty products and paints businesses. The Group's four principal businesses are National Starch, Quest, Uniqema and ICI Paints, which together account for more than 90% of ICI's sales. Today around a quarter of ICI's sales are made in Asia Pacific and 40% in the Americas with less than 12% now made in the UK.

ICI products today include flavours and starches for the food industry, fragrances, surfactants and specialty polymers for personal care products, adhesives for the electronics and packaging markets as well as a wide range of decorative coatings and specialty products for domestic use and the construction industry. Listed on both the London and New York Stock Exchanges, ICI is a member of the FTSE100, FTSE4Good and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. ICI has around 33,000 employees worldwide and had sales in 2004 of 5.6 billion GBP.
