LANXESS expands screed product range

Published on 2006-01-16. Author : SpecialChem

LEVERKUSEN -- Some special requirements apply when preparing screeds over which top floors are to be laid. A primer that improves adhesion to the screed surface is needed to avoid problems when laying flexible floor coverings, tile or parquet over mineral screeds. LANXESS Deutschland GmbH now offers Meboplast®, a new, solvent-free universal dispersion primer that is suitable for all calcium sulfate and cement screeds in accordance with DIN 18560. This saponification-resistant plastic dispersion is a further development of the proven product, Meboplast® N. It reduces the absorbent action of mineral substrates and increases the bonding strength of the screed to the filler or adhesive.

Meboplast® is suitable for more than just the pretreatment of mineral screeds. The primer can also be applied to plasterboard, gypsum plaster, non-absorbent and even smooth substrates. It can even be used with mastic asphalt screeds, tile, terrazzo, wood, particleboard and old but still serviceable adhesive coatings.

The substrate must be dry, solid and capable of bearing weight in addition to being free of loose constituents or impurities before the primer can be applied using a sheepskin roller or a brush, for example. Drying times range from approx. 15 minutes on cement screeds to roughly half an hour on non-absorbent or weakly absorbent substrates. Primed wood and particleboard are sufficiently dry after around four hours.

Like Meboplast® N, the new additive from the Basic Chemicals business unit is suitable for the formulation of adhesion bridges and adhesive slurries for bonded screeds, and can also be used as evaporation protection when drying cement screeds.

The Basic Chemicals business unit is part of the Chemical Intermediates segment, which posted sales of 1.487 million euros in fiscal 2004.
