New Georgia-Pacific LEAF™ Wood Adhesives Aid in CARB Phase 2 Compliance

Published on 2009-09-24. Author : SpecialChem

ATLANTA -- Georgia-Pacific Chemicals announces the launch of its LEAF™ low-emission adhesives. These adhesives are designed to aid in complying with a variety of green building standards and the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure to Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products Phase 2 requirements. LEAF wood adhesives are designed for use in particleboard and medium density fiberboard that is used in furniture paneling, cabinetry and other products with composite wood parts.

Created by Georgia-Pacific, a reliable supplier to the forest products industry for more than 50 years, the initial LEAF products are formulated with proven technology to be economical solutions for users.

"LEAF products can be easily substituted into current manufacturing processes and help our customers move ahead of the curve in terms of CARB Phase 2 compliance," says Ashlee Cribb, Georgia-Pacific wood adhesives market manager. "CARB Phase 2 emissions are not required until 2011, but due to the time needed for certification and other concerns about sell-through provisions, it is critical for manufacturers to start the certification and conversion process now."

The current line includes two products. LEAF™ C2 resins, designed for compliance with CARB Phase 2, are easy to adopt and compatible with existing manufacturing processes. LEAF C2 resins are available in urea-formaldehyde or melamine-urea-formaldehyde formulations. The products may also contribute to meeting green building standard requirements.

LEAF™ GB products do not contain any added urea-formaldehyde. They contribute toward Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED®) credits and meet other green building standards. LEAF GB formulations may be melamine-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde based and can be used in tandem with Georgia-Pacific's unique scavenger systems. They can be customized to meet CARB Phase 2 requirements as well, and are compatible with existing manufacturing processes for easy substitution.

"These products provide our customers with a platform of solutions to meet their needs. Georgia-Pacific has always been a wood adhesives innovator and we are committed to helping our customers provide more sustainable products," says Cribb.

The products will be introduced at the quadrennial International Wood Adhesives Conference September 28-30 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
