Tesa opens Converting Center in Chennai

Tesa SE opened a Converting Center on June 2 at the Mahindra World City industrial park in the Indian port city of Chennai. "By opening this new location, our aim is to boost our industrial business in this booming region", Tesa CEO Thomas Schlegel said during the dedication ceremony. "The company is consistently pursuing its successful strategy of developing attractive future lines of business in high-tech sectors for its worldwide industrial business and further developing its global structures." In addition to the CEO, further Tesa executives attended the plant opening, including Matthias von Schwerdtner, Regional Manager Asia Pacific, and Pradip S. Sachan, Managing Director Tesa India.

"The Tesa Converting Center will cut and convert self adhesive products primarily for the local market, especially the thriving local automotive and renewable energy sectors", explained Pradip S. Sachan. The new building occupies 2,300 square meters of space and houses not only the cutting and winding machine, but also a warehouse and a quality assurance lab. The facility is starting out with a staff of 25.

Regional Manager Matthias von Schwerdtner about the goal of the investment, which came to a volume of about 145 million Indian rupees (2.4 million euros) and was planned back in 2007: "Tesa will be able to offer international industrial customers optimum service at the local level, and above all to be able to react more quickly and more flexibly to market requirements." Major global manufacturers, including Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Ford, BMW, and Hyundai, are represented in and around Mahindra World City. The cornerstone of the Tesa Converting Center was laid at the end of September 2009.

Technical adhesive tapes from Tesa have been known on the Indian market for nearly 60 years: 1952 marked the first time that Tesa embarked on a cooperative arrangement with an Indian company - Parry & Co., based in Bombay - for the exclusive distribution of its products. Later, Tesa partnered with Cosme Matias Menezes Ltd., based in the state of Goa.
