ITRI’s Natural Wood Adhesive Solution Wins Gold at 2020 Edison AwardsIndustrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has won gold for the innovative adhesive solution CelluadTM, at the 2020 Edison Awards in the material sciences and engineering category.

ITRI’s CelluadTM is a formaldehyde-free wood adhesive made using abandoned cellulose derivative as its main raw material and can be applied to plywood, flooring, and lumber core board. Unlike soy protein-based formaldehyde-free wood adhesives, CelluadTM is less expensive and eliminates the issue of competing with food. The adhesive has no strong odor and does not spoil easily when stored.

Water Resistant Adhesive with High Process Compatibility

CelluadTM exhibits excellent adhesion and is water-resistant owing to its unique formula and modification process. The hydrophobic resin of the adhesive resists boiling water for upto four hours, meeting the test requirements of CNS1349 type I (100˚ C).

CelluadTM shows high process compatibility and does not require additional purchase of equipment to manufacture plywood from CelluadTM.

The manufacturing facilities involved in the formaldehyde-free plywood fabrication process matches the original ones and the system is easy to use.

The 2020 winners illustrate how important the advancement of research and design is to reimagine the fast-changing future. The Edison Award honorees serve as global beacons of how positive innovations are changing our world,” said Frank Bonafilia, executive director of the Edison Awards.
