2016 Adhesives Industry Highlights: Interview with Edward Petrie

Sreeparna Das – Dec 14, 2016

Now that we are in the last month of this year, it is a good time to look back and capture the main highlights from the Adhesives Industry in 2016. I caught up with Edward Petrie , a leading industry expert, to get his quick view on what really stood out for him this year. Edward Petrie

Edward Petrie received his BS in Chemical Engineering and MS in Polymer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University and his MBA from Duquesne University. His 40 year industrial career included R&D positions at Westinghouse Electric and ABB where he was a specialist in all areas of adhesion and adhesives. Currently, Mr. Petrie is an independent consultant and sole proprietor of EMP Solutions

Mr. Petrie has authored the Handbook of Adhesives and Sealants and Epoxy Adhesive Formulations, both published by McGraw-Hill, and Plastics Materials and Processes, published by Wiley Interscience. He has also written numerous papers on adhesive bonding including chapters in several Handbooks.

Which were the most innovative adhesives in the market this year?

My top three would be:
  • Ultra-fast curing adhesive for laminating, Symbiex™ solvent-less adhesive – from Dow and Nordmeccanica SpA
  • Low amine migrating polyurethane laminating adhesives – from Henkel
  • Formaldehyde free biomass-based plywood adhesive – from ITRI

Regulations and testing are quite important for this industry. Anything that was particularly important in 2016?

An important update to note is the new migration testing techniques i.e. new guideline on conformity testing of adhesives for food contact applications from FEICA.

End of May 2016, FECIA’s Paper and Packaging Technical Working Group published new guidelines. It is part of a package on migration testing of non-plastic food contact material developed by several sector associations from the packaging supply chain.

FEICA logoThe guidance paper covers information around the key adhesives used in food packaging including:
  • Reactive polyurethane (PU) adhesives
  • Adhesives based on natural polymers
  • Dispersions / emulsions based on PVAc, EVA, acrylics, etc.
  • Cold seals
  • Heat seals
  • Hotmelt adhesives

2016 Adhesives Industry Highlights

What do you see as the key trends in the adhesives industry currently?

My top three would be:
  • Smart adhesives development - self-healing, stimuli activated (e.g., thermal expandable), etc.
  • Use of stress free bonding technologies especially in microelectronics and when bonding materials with different thermal expansion coefficients - low temperature curing, controlled-staged curing, flexible adhesives...
  • Toughening of structural adhesives using nano-particles

Thank you Edward for sharing your thoughts. It'll be very interesting to keep a tab on these trends and I, along with our readers would surely look forward to reading more from you on these trends next year!

Wish you a great 2017!
