Formulation of Adhesives and Sealants for Electrical / Electronic Applications

SpecialChem / Feb 26, 2003

There are many industries where adhesives must perform several special functions in addition to their primary function of bonding or joining. These industries often have test methods, specifications, and nomenclature that are unique and somewhat foreign to adhesive and sealant formulators. One such industry is the electrical / electronic industry. This paper is aimed at acquainting adhesive formulators with the unique features and requirements that are employed in this industry. For the purposes of this paper, we will lump two industries, electrical and electronic, into one since it is difficult to place boundaries between the two, and often they have similar, if not, identical requirements. The electrical industry is comprised of manufacturers of motors, transformers, meters, etc. It is a large, stable industry with demands for many types of adhesive products. The electronic industry, on the other hand, is growing significantly, and new products are forthcoming at a rapid rate.
