High Coating Speed Emulsion Adhesives

Maximizing coating line speed is an obvious approach to improving manufacturing economics for the adhesive converter. Adhesive coatings are often applied to continuous web material through the use of high-speed coating devices. However, optimal speed is only achievable by considering the adhesive formulation, coating equipment, and drying processes, and often these sub-processes provide conflicting requirements. Aqueous adhesives provide unique challenges in this respect, even though they are widely used in many markets such as pressure sensitive tapes and labels, assembly adhesives for cartons and folding boxes, and laminating adhesives. These adhesives have to be able to work with high-speed machinery systems. This article will analyze characteristics required of the (1) adhesive, (2) coating equipment, and (3) drying conditions to achieve high speed processing of emulsion adhesives. Important parameters in controlling the rheology of the adhesive in high-speed coating operations are solids content, viscosity, and surface tension.
