Looking Toward the Future – Pressure Sensitive Labels - Part II

SpecialChem / Sep 27, 2005

In a recent article presented in SpecialChem4Adhesives the future evolution of pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes was discussed.1 This current article is a companion piece on the winds of change that may affect the pressure sensitive label industry. The major trends in material and process developments as well as advances in new label applications will be discussed. Whereas tapes account for approximately 60% of the overall pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) market, labels account for roughly 30% with the remainder being used as primary coatings and laminating adhesives. The label market, however, is growing at a faster rate than tape primarily because of many new applications. World label shipments are expected to grow almost 9% per year to $73 billion USD in 2007. Pressure sensitive labels will account for about 55% of the overall label market. Primary and secondary packaging is by far the largest segment of the labels market followed by the industrial, decorative and mailing / shipping segments.
