No More New Polymers?

Edward M. Petrie & Edward Petrie – Apr 15, 2011

This editorial looks at the history of new polymer development, and speculates that good times are still ahead – despite historical evidence of the opposite. The introduction of fully synthetic polymeric materials based on new monomers started in the 1920s and passed through a maximum in the 1950s. After that only a few new polymers were introduced and even fewer were successful in the market. There, of course are several explanations for this and there are also several reasons why this does not mean that innovation has stopped or even that it is dying out.
