Packaging Adhesives Help Replace Metal and Glass Containers

Edward M Petrie – Jul 1, 2009

Notice the ever increasing number of flexible food pouches that are replacing metal and glass containers in your supermarket? These are called retort pouches and large food companies are taking advantage of technical advances of these innovative package designs.Retort pouches are made of multiple layers of laminations. Traditionally, this has been between three and five although the current direction is aimed at using only two layers to reduce cost. Various materials are used in these layers including films of PET, thin metal foil, nylon, polypropylene, and specialty materials such as aluminum oxide, silica oxide, or nanocomposite coatings.
