Sealants for Construction - Part V-2 Applications: Glass Sealants/Glazing, Sealing Doors and Windows, Double Windows Glazing, Ceramic Tiles and Sanitary Uses

SpecialChem / Philippe Cognard – Sep 15, 2004

This is the largest use of sealants if we include the sealing of double insulated windows, which is studied later in this chapter. We will first study the standard glazing of windows. Windows were mostly made of wood frames and some aluminum frames tilt the seventies, the woods being frequently tropical woods which resist to outside weathering, rain... such as Sipo, Sapelli... Windows and roofs or sheds of factories and industrial buildings are still made of steel or aluminum frames. Nowadays plastic windows, mainly PVC, have outnumbered the former materials for windows. Windows were made in the past with a single glass panel, but now the major part is made with double glass panels tor thermal and sound insulation purposes. Figure 1 shows a typical system for the installation of a glass panel into a metal or plastic frame, and provides the terminology: setting blocks and spacer shims allow to position the glass panel into the channel of the window at the right place, the glass panel should never come into contact with the frame or tillister, a drainage of water is usually necessary in order to prevent the water of staying into the channel, which could damage the sealant.
