All these techniques are used to decorate wood based panels or even wood ( such as cheap wood ) in order to obtain the aspect of true and expensive woods by using nice wood veneers or decorative films and laminates.
In this technique, a high pressure decorative laminate ( HPL ), such as Formica ®, Sunlite ® or Polyrey ®, is bonded usually onto a wood based panel ( particle boards, fiberboard or MDF or similar ) and around rounded edges in order to get a wrapping and a protection of the edges.
Then the HPL which are are thin ( less than 1 mm thickness ), special types that can be softened by applying heat, usually around 80 to 90°C, are bended over the edges.
The adhesives which are used for the edge bonding must have a high heat resistance or cohesion at elevated temperature, because temperature right after the heating of the HPL may reach 70 to 80°C at the glue line, and, at this temperature, the adhesive film should still have enough cohesion to hold firmly the folded laminate while it cools down.
