Sealants

The main difference between adhesives and sealants is that sealants typically have lower strength and higher elongation than do adhesives. The main objective of a sealant is to seal assemblies and joints. They adhere to the substrates and resist environmental conditions to remain bonded over the required life of the assembly. Sealants contain inert filler material and are formulated with an elastomer to give the required flexibility and elongation. They usually have a paste consistency to allow filling of gaps between substrates.

Select Dispersing Agents for Adhesives and Sealants

By Edward M. Petrie

Dispersing agents are essential formulation components in adhesives and sealants to effectively disperse fillers or solid particles. They provide electrostatic or steric stabilization to prevent particles from flocculating, thereby eliminate any viscosity change and phase separation. While creating a new formulation, one must choose dispersing agents with appropriate dosage level for specific product & end-user requirements. Learn more about dispersing agents by reviewing: Dispersing Agents: Mode of Action Stabilization Mechanisms Chemical Classification of Dispersing Agents Formulation Challenges Criteria for Selecting Dispersing Agents Requirements for Proper Functioning of Dispersing Agents (Continue reading or click to go on specific section of the page)
